Sawston Fun Run

Beneficiaries of the 2008 Sawston Fun Run are announced

Nine charities and organisations to benefit from this year’s Sawston Charity Fun Run and Walk have been announced by the organisers, the Rotary Club of Sawston District. They aim to raise at least £15,000 to add to the £283,000 that has already been raised for local charities since 1986; thereby ensuring it maintains its place as one of the largest community-led charity events in the region.

The four major ones will be:

  • Cambridge Cancer Help Centre Unit - to help fund the new counselling and support centre being built in Great Shelford at Scotsdales Garden Centre.
  • Addenbrookes Prostate Cancer Unit - to help purchase key equipment to fight this disease.
  • Magpas - to help buy specialist medical equipment for roadside accidents.
  • Teenage Cancer Trust - to help fund the new 12 bed teenage cancer unit to be built at Addenbrookes Hospital - adding to the £5,000 already donated from the 2005 event.

Other organisations to benefit will be:

  • 1st Sawston Scouts - to purchase camping equipment for the scouts cubs and beavers.
  • Sawston Youth Drama - to purchase modern sound equipment.
  • Sawston Youth Group - to help purchase equipment for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
  • South Cambs. Riding for the Disabled - to pay for the hire of ponies for one year.
  • Pippins Pre-school - to help with the development of outdoor facilities.

The event will be held on Sunday 27th April at Sawston Village College and entry forms will be available later in February off www.sawstonfunrun.co.uk and from all branches of Cambridge Building Society and the Community Office at the College.

The event attracts more businesses and retailers each year who wish to be associated with the largest community event in the area. Advertising and sponsorship opportunities exist for those who are keen to be involved with the local community and support the charities. Details can be obtained from Tony Collett, Chairman of the Organising Committee, on 01223 893447 or emailing tony.collett@virgin.net

New funds available

The Sawston Fun Run has traditionally donated funds after July each year to those who had been selected some 8 months earlier by the Charity Selection Committee. This group, made up of Rotarians and long term friends of the Fun Run, have decided this year to make funds available to those who need help before the 2008 event is held.

Having met the needs of the beneficiaries of the 2007 event it was decided to make £2,500 available now rather than to build up an unnecessary reserve. Quite often we hear of urgent needs that the Fun Run cannot consider because the funds from each event only become available in July each year. This will help those who cannot wait until that time.
