Sawston Fun Run
ANOTHER £15,250 DONATED TO LOCAL CHARITIES AND GOOD CAUSES
Local charities and organisations benefited by another £15,250 from this year's Sawston Fun Run and Walk. At a presentation held in the Henry Morris Hall on July 4th at Sawston Village College, twelve local charities and organisations benefited from the April 29th event. It took the total donated to charities and organisations serving Sawston and Cambridgeshire to over £285,000 since the event was started in 1986.
A steel pan band entertained everyone on arrival and ensured a celebratory party mood for the evening. June Cannie, principal of Sawston Village College welcomed over 120 members of the community - representatives from the charities, the sponsors, key supporters and members of the Rotary Club of Sawston District, who organised the event.
David Morris, the 2007/08 president of the Sawston District Rotary club, thanked June Cannie for providing the venue for the event and her staff for their support and said ‘The club was delighted it could organise the event as clearly the community welcomed the opportunity to support local charities and to come together to have a fun morning. That over £285,000 had been raised over the 22 years was evidence of the humanitarian concern that the community had for others’. He expressed special gratitude to Cambridge Building Society for their substantial sponsorship and Kirsty McMullen; Russells, the estate agents; Spicers; Vindis of Sawston and the Sawston Parish Council who all provided support that enabled a traffic management company to be hired. Thanks were also given to KallKwik Printing, Hadham Water, Welch's Transport, the Army and Air Cadets, Sawston Scouts, Sawston Youth Group, local retailers, the marshals, and the fire services who all helped the event.
Andrew Ferguson, Head of Business Development at the Cambridge Building Society, expressed the building society’s pleasure at being associated with such a large community event and said ‘it reflects the building society’s commitment to the local community throughout its branch network and was pleased their Sawston branch staff were so supportive.’ He presented the annual adult and young person’s shields to the two entrants who raised the most money - Howard Russell of Dry Drayton who raised £450 and Stephanie Foote of Stapleford who raised £313.
Cheques were presented by Andrew Ferguson to the twelve charities and organisations.

It was announced that due to the success of the event a further £2,000 was being held in reserve for local charities to access during the year. This was in response to applications that are received and rejected as the proceeds from the Fun Run only become available every July. Information on how to apply via the Sawston District Rotary club will be announced in the near future.
Following the presentation of cheques Sawston Youth Drama [SYD] sang a number of songs from their musical repertoire and provided a fitting finale to the evening of celebration. David Morris thanked SYD for their major contribution to the enjoyment and success of the evening and presented a cheque to help with their fund raising efforts.
The evening concluded with Dr Charlotte Coles of the breast oncology unit of Addenbrookes expressing appreciation of the gift they received and on behalf of everyone thanking the Rotary Club of Sawston District for organising the event and providing such an enjoyable evening.
Next year's Fun Run event will take place on Sunday April 27th.
