New funds available and charitable status in the offing

Funding to help local charities and organisations is available from the 2007 Fun Run because £2,500 has been reserved from the event to help those who urgently need funds before July 2008.

The Sawston Fun Run has traditionally donated funds after July each year to those who had been selected some 8 months earlier by the Charity Selection Committee. This group, made up of Rotarians and long term friends of the Fun Run, decided this year to make funds available to those who need help before the 2008 event is held.

Tony Collett, chairman of the committee said ‘Having met the needs of the beneficiaries of the 2007 event it was decided to make £2,500 available now rather than to build up an unnecessary reserve. Quite often we hear of urgent needs that the Fun Run cannot consider because the funds from each event only become available in July each year. This will help those who cannot wait until that time’.

The event, one of the largest community-led events in the region, has donated £282,225 to local charities and organisations since it was first held in 1986. It is hoped that by next year the event will have charity status in its own right. This will make it even more appealing to donors and will take the event to new heights in the community. The Rotary Club of Sawston District will still be responsible for it and is in the process of making an application to the Charity Commission.

Applications for access to these funds should phone Tony Collett on 01223 893447 or obtain a form off the website www.sawstonfunrun.co.uk

Notes for Editor

The event regularly attracts over 900 entrants, serious running club members but mainly fun runners, walkers together with those in wheelchairs. Details of how to enter will be released in the New Year.

The event was started in 1986 by Sawston Village College and the main sponsor is the Cambridge Building Society.

The Rotary Club of Sawston District has organised the event since 2001 and donated over £93,000 to local charities and organisations.

Rotary is short for Rotary International - it is the world’s largest volunteering organisation with an association of local clubs for men and women in business or the professions who:
